Have you got a recent restore point that you can revert to?

You cannot resist tinkering tongue Leave windows as it comes out the box, Microsoft usually get it right!

What is the right way to uninstall Classic Shell?
To uninstall Classic Shell follow these steps:

1 Stop the start menu if it is installed (right-click on the start button and select Exit)
2 Open a new Windows Explorer window
3 Make sure the toolbar is hidden (if you uninstall while the toolbar is visible, the menu bar in Explorer will get stuck in the visible state and you wont be able to hide it)
4 Close all Windows Explorer windows
5 Open Control Panel -> Programs and Features and double-click on Classic Shell. Then follow the instructions. You may have to restart Windows to complete the process.
6 If you installed any additional skins for the start menu you will have to delete them manually

After I uninstalled Classic Shell I can't hide the menu in Explorer any more. What do I do?
If you missed step 3 from the uninstall instructions and you are having problems with the menu, you have two options:

1 Go to the registry, open the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\ShellBrowser key and delete the ITBar7Layout value as described here: http://qttabbar.sourceforge.net/?p=79
2 Install Classic Shell again and uninstall it following all the instructions

System restore is very lightweight in Windows 7, unless your system is really underpowered there is little reason to disable it.

I notice the slow down tho.

with it off my HD activity is low, only active when im opening files etc. if im just reading though a webpage or watching something then there is only the odd flash here and there for the HDD activity light.

With system restore on my HDD activity goes insane and the activity light is on solid all the time and this slows things down a fair bit when i go to open a game or movie

I cannot see this being the case to be honest, apart from maybe the first few days after installing Windows. If this is the case you have done something to make it go screwy.

That is because you have just enabled it and it is busy preparing it's initial shadow copies and other things. If you give it a day or so it will go away...

Sorry not convinced, never seen such issues with system restore. XP on borked systems, yes, Vista and above, no.

Not running any 3rd party defraggers are you which may be causing purge shadow copies? Or otherwise anything which interfers with the OS?

And tbh i dont give a flying carp if your "not convinced" i know what it dose to my pc and that is all that matters.

If it works fine for you then congrats but at the end of the day i dont need SR

reinstall it, set everything back to windows defaults, then uninstall it.

Personally I love the app tho, I also used it to make IE9 better as well, with the status bar etc.
