Running XP, just updated to FF8 and lost quite a number of bookmark favicons. Still there on my laptop running FF v7. Tried deleting and reinstalling bookmarks but no go.
Google suggest it's not an unknown problem, anyone here found a solution?

Favicons are still not saved with backups. Just open all your bookmarks at once to fix.

Thanks, tried that but no change!

K, well export as json and then import again, and then load them all.

Thanks again, tried that too but no good!
I have logged a comment on support.mozilla.com as I am not alone with this anomaly apparently

I thought it was me.
I leave update of FF until they have been around abd bugs like that sorted. So, when it offered an update to FF7 which I accepted (fed up with the nag prompt), I was a little peeved when it installed FF8 which have been released about 1 hour before!
My bookmarks file has dozens of blank squares.

Okay, then rebuild your profile.
- Create a firefox shortcut on your desktop. Right-click > properties. At the end of the text in 'Target' add -p then click ok.
- Launch the shortcut and create new profile (give it a memerorable name), then launch the new profile. Close the resulting window as soon as it opens.
- Then open an Explorer window and copy-paste the following into folder location bar: %APPDATA%/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles
- Go into the old default directory and ctrl-select then copy the following files: extensions (directory), cert8.db, cookies.sqlite, downloads.sqlite, formhistory.sqlite, key3.db, permissions.sqlite, places.sqlite and signons.sqlite
- Go up a directory level and then into the new profle you created and paste/overwrite all the files.
- Launch firefox as usual and then import all your bookmarks as a backup.

Have you tried an add on?
eg. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bookm...
Tried that, no good but thanks for the thought!

Again, thanks for the suggestion. Perhaps I will wait for the mighty Mozilla to come up with a solution. It's not exactly a world shattering problem really

I doubt they will. The bug was probably in the upgrade process. It might have lead to a faulty setting in your profile that won't be fixed even if they fix the bug. They'll just tell you to create a new profile.

Try 'AM Deadlink'. Handy tool for checking links to see if they still exist, checking for duplicates, and downloading favicons.

If that is the case, I will attempt your excellent instructions when I get a chance

One such link is to my router and that's still there

For info, I took the easy route and went back to FF 7.0.1 and disabled auto-update! Cured the favicons of course and is now much faster to respond to bookmarks etc.

Why do people go to the trouble of asking for solutions on a forum, but then ignore any that are posted? Were you just trolling?

Maybe he weighed up the options and decided on what he felt was right for him and his system. Advice isn't mandatory. If it were, FC would be a place of sweetness, feathers and smiling friends.

To be fair, Andrew did follow a few of your suggestions, so he didn't ignore "any that were posted". I guess that he just got tired of trying things without success and took the easy way out.

He did not try a new profile, or else the problem would have been fixed.
