Why is £ sign shown as £ ?

In
this
post I see the £ sign as £ Clearly this is the HTML code for the £ sign but why is it displaying as code not as £ sign?
Is it the poster writing the HTML not realising that HTML markup is not supported by TBB?
Just curious.
