Can't get iPlayer Desktop to work

After endless fun (not!) trying to install it, I eventually found it wouldn't do it in Chrome, but would in IE 9, so did it that way.

That was not the end of the matter, however, as now it's installed, it won't work. Every time I try to download a programme, it tries to force a re-install, even though it's already installed.

FAQs indicate this is a known - and recent - problem with Chrome, and that the workaround is to use another browser.

So back to IE again...

Except I'm having exactly the same problem. It won't download there either, and is trying to force a new install of the (just installed) software.

Could be a problem with Abobe AIR?

Perhaps uninstall both the iPlayer Desktop and Adobe AIR, reboot and then from ie9 reinstall iPlayer Desktop and Adobe AIR. Also might be a good idea to change the location of the iPlayer repository folder also...

You could try using Revo Uninstaller. This will clean out all registry entries and associated files. You will need to use advanced mode. I find it very effective at cleaning up stuff that application uninstallers leave behind and it rarely makes mistakes.

Remember to select the free version (bottom of page).

Uninstall Chrome and iPlayer, turn on Explorer's "Show All Files/Hidden/System Files" etc, carefully search out and manually delete any folders belonging to either. Look in Program Files, Common Files, Program Data and User folders etc etc.
Run CCleaner's registry cleaner.

Reboot and try reinstalling iPlayer using IE.
