Removal of ALOT toolbar

A friend contacted me a couple of days ago as he's managed to get the ALOT toolbar on his desktop (and now on his laptop). I think he uses IE though not currently sure which version.

I'm going round Saturday afternoon to see what I can do to remove them. He says he's tried but it reappears. So whether it's a persistent item or he's continuing to use the software that originally put it there I don't know.

There's a fair bit about it on the web and I've now got various things to try. Wondering if anyone here has any experiences of it and removing it?

Also wondered whether it propagates itself to other PCs on the network? Thinking about the laptop and whether if I connect my netbook to his network I risk getting ALOT installed?

It's just add/remove programs, and remove from Firefox Add-ons.

Thank for those. I had the first two already, but not the third. As I said in the OP I think he uses IE but a similar approach can apply to IE as Firefox.
