Odd 'Freeze'

I just had the computer freeze (W7 64 bit) - I was on the M&S website and the mouse seemed to lose precise control (Logitech Performance MX).
When I could get the cursor on a close window button, nothing would happen, nor would the taskbar show when I moved the cursor to the bottom of the screen.
I also had Outlook and ACDSee12 Photo Manager open.
After a while, I forced a shutdown.

Once re-started, the mouse began working perfectly, the AV showed nothing untoward in reports or with a critical area scan, and SuperantiSpyware only found tracking cookies.

I had no instructions on how to shut down W7 from the keyboard, but have now found some:
Press & release the Windows key
Press Right Arrow key,(I assume I then release it)
Press Enter

Also, for re-start:
Press & release the Windows key
Press Right Arrow key twice
Press Up Arrow key once
Press Enter.

Does anyone have any idea what happened with the frozen screen/poor reponding mouse ?

I use it routinely, for some reason I seem to prefer using keyboard sequences

If it happens again try changing the mouse batteries.

Normally when my windows stops responding it is because something it wants is unavailable and often this is a network-y type thing or a disk drive has shut down for power saving.

I may be teaching grandmother ......
But there are a lot of useful key combinations when you get stuck on a computer, most of which have been about almost since the start of windows.

CTRL+S Save the current document
CTRL+F4 Close the current document
ALT+F4 Close the current program

ALT +TAB Cycle through open programs

The above let you shut down everything safely.

Windows key - bring up the start menu which can then be followed by the cursor key to select the option required and ENTER to select it.

WINDOWS+E to start windows explorer.
WINDOWS +M to return to the desktop
WINDOWS +R to bring up the run box.

When in a program
ALT starts a command sequence, follow it by the underlined letter in any menu to show that menu. Followed by the underlined letter on the menu option required.

eg ALT F A will normally select "File" "Save as"

CTRL+C copies the selected item

CTRL+V pastes the clipboard to the cursor.

CTRL+Z undoes the last edit or action.

ESC once or sometimes twice - stop what you started by mistake.

Ctrl Shift Esc starts the Windows Task Manager, which can be useful to stop a rogue process. You can also start the task manager via the Ctrl Alt Del menu.

OK, I'll try the battery change route if it happens again, but I actually have a spare new mouse, and when I tried it, it made no difference.

I did try pressing 'Esc' and also 'Ctrl Alt Del' but nothing happened, so your explanation may have some bearing on what happened. It's possible keyboard shortcuts wouldn't have worked anyway.
I'll take a look in the Event Viewer and see if anything looks likely there - I don't always understand things in event viewer, but I'll look anyway.

For some reason all the websites that automatically recognise me don't since that forced shut-down and I'm having to log into things again. Seems that stuff in explorer got cleared out.

BACK or ALT+LEFT work as a browser page back, ALT+RIGHT as a browser page forward.
