"Windows update service not running" - Vista

I've replaced the hdd in my laptop with a larger 500gig drive. I had a backup of the old drive using Acronis True Image 2013. I installed the image on the new drive and all appears to be working ok.

However I tried to run windows update and get the error message "Windows update service not running" I've downloaded and run Microsoft fix it centre. This reports that the problem was fixed, but it isn't. I've tried other 'fix it' progs with no success.

I seem to recall un-checking a service in 'services' to do with automatic windows updates as the .exe was using 100% processor, but I can't remember what it was. Stupid of me I know.

I would be grateful if someone can point me in the right direction.

Automatic Updates on Auto?

It wasn't, but there is a 'check for updates' button which should work but doesn't.

I've just looked in Services, and windows is shown as 'Status' started, 'Started Type' Automatic (Delayed Start). I've clicked on 'Restart the service' top left of Services box but nothing has changed.

control panel/ admin tools/ component services/ services local/ windows update ( should show started) If stop highlight line and click start top left of window.

Have you tried changing to setting to "never check for updates" rebooting,
and changing it back?

Check that BITS (background intelligent transfer service) and Windows Update services are both running.

I was talking about Services which you'd forgotten, not System Properties.

Is the Automatic Updates Service set to Auto?

Yes, that tactic often fixes things. Might not even need to reboot.

Tried that David. Interestingly a quick view of the updating bar then return of the error message.

I was checking in services. The automatic updates was set to Download but let me choose which to install.
