XP, delete registry entries allow new hardware

This PCI slot sound card shows up in Device Manager as working and all the codecs ok too.

Thing is, in media player or sounds/system sounds there is " no audio device" either playback or record.

Uninstall in Device Manager and trying Add hardware does nothing different.

I made an effort in Safe Mode to delete its entries in the registry in HKLM and the Control Sets but it still comes back as working but no audio device.

Any hints about proper deleting of registry entries much appreciated.

is the Audio service running ? have had that disappear before.

yes it's running.

Onboard Realtek or similar? Ensure that you have the correct driver. Download directly from the mobo manufacturers website.
