faulty DVD/CD give BSoD in windows 8

i am sorting out my disks and some of them are not in great condition as they are getting on a bit and been stacked in a pile. but what gets me is that when windows 8 can't read a disk it will give me a BSoD. i never had that on windows 7.

i do clean them before I put then in the drive, but some just don't work.

Never known a computer to BSoD, just because of a faulty disk.

Sounds like a faulty device driver or the DVD/CD rom drive is somehow causing a hardware fault in the system. I've never heard or experienced this fault before though.

Any antivirus software installed?

i managed to see the error the last time, it was something like driver irq not less or equal, storport.sys.

i use comodo antivirus.

I never heard of this problem either to be honest, I did not have it on windows 7, but then there are a few small problems with windows 8 I did not have with 7.

i been thinking of going back to 7 anyway, so maybe this will get me moving to reinstall it.

Unfortunately Windows has never been very good at dealing with fault CD/DVD's - usually Explorer just locks up though...

Maybe so, but it should not reset the computer.

Oh well i will reinstall Directory opus, maybe that will do the job or just use the laptop as that have Linux on it.

Indeed - but unfortunately that side of Windows is poor.

It sounds like you could replicate it - one thing you could do to see if your CD/DVD drive is the problem is to use either another internal one or a USB one.

If it happens again then it might be worth contacting Microsoft and report a bug or two...

Easy to replicate, just put a dirty disk in the drive.

nothing wrong with the drive, i blame windows 8, never had the problem with windows 7.

If it happens again then it might be worth contacting Microsoft and report a bug or two...

contacting Ms is like contacting Talk Talk.

I think we need a decent OS, oh i wish I could get a decent video editor for Linux.

Come on Adrian - don't be so naive. It is more likely nothing to do directly with Windows 8. I thought you was never ever using Windows 8 anyway?

What sort of PC is this anyway? Some old [censored] junk from 10 years ago? Buy a new computer for £300 or so, you won't regret it, and you'll start to love Windows 8.

Almost certainly bad hardware. The worst that would happen is explorer may stop responding, but if you crossed it off, explorer would just reload.

Windows 7 was probably masking the bad hardware due to different drivers in use.

Either this or the hardware is incompatible with windows 8 (not likely).

Yeah, but I did not pay for it, so I thought I would give it a go. it is not a pirated version either in case you are thinking that.

Because there is not a decent video editor on the alternatives, apart from OSx, but over priced comes to mind with that.

I have Linux on my laptop and I do have a second drive on here with Linux and do go back to it to see if the video editors on it have improved and they have, but not enough

Do you really think I would even put windows 7 never mind windows 8 on a ten year old machine? I have never had a ten year old machine as my main computer. Ok i do have a ten year old machine, but this is not it and that is a old 233 with windows 98 running and is used for my security cameras.

This machine I am using is about 2 and a half years old with some upgrades along the way.

It consist of a Corsair 8GB DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800 XMS3 ram
AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition 3.5GHz
Asrock 970 extreme 3 motherboard
Seagate 500Gb hybrid drive.

Then added 12 months after a corsair 128GB SataIII SSD unit.
Video card is now a Sapphire Radion HD6570 with 2GB of DDR3 ram

So I think it should cope with windows 8 ok, it may not be a top end machine these days, but it can still give my mates I7 a run for it's money when rendering video.

i expect there is a problem with a driver somewhere, but I don't really have the time to muck about with it, so if it don't work I will put the image i got of windows 7 back on, that will sort it out. Anyway, I am not using windows 8 as MS wants us to use it, I got a start menu on and don't have the metro showing, so I may as well go back to windows 7


i don't know why people get so defensive about windows 8.
