Only took me 9 months but if you mouse up to the top of the app a hand appears, grab it with a left click and throw it to the bottom of the screen. AT LAST!

Microsoft will tell you there is no need to close apps in metro as when they are in background they hibernate and don't take system resources (I had one of the MS evangelists telling me this).
However, I still close them if I am not using them - maybe I am just too old school.
As do I on my WM phone. And sometimes it seems to drain the battery rather more quickly than usual even when there is supposedly nothing running which is when I reboot it to clear out any zombie processes that had been left running.

Not true for music player apps they still keep playing music in the background. I know because I work on the desktop and listen to the groove app.
