Windows XP - sound not working

Hi there

I have a NEC I-Select M5210 laptop running Windows XP SP3. I noticed that the sound has stopped working, with the laptop sound controls greyed out.

I have uninstalled and installed the the sound drivers to no effect. The laptop does not have a sound card.

I would be grateful of any suggestions to resolve this problem.
