Moving Win7 to a larger drive C:

When I built my 'new' pc last year, I thought that a 64 GB SSD would be big enough for the Win7 Pro OS and programs, with all data on a separate HDD. Seems I was wrong and for most of the time I have had only 8 - 10 GB of headroom.

Reinstalling Win7 onto a new larger SSD didn't bother me, but reinstalling Outlook 2003 would test my patience some what...

Anyway, Googling around I came across this method:-

Direct disk cloning software is the simplest way to accomplish the task. Most of the manufacturers provide free versions. Paragon is my favourite, but others exist.

Agreed paragon or seagate disk cloner, you may need to reactivate after as some cloners change the hard drive serial number which may trigger re-activation.

I've had that problem with Linux before now. But I used Paragon do do this very job, with Windows 7, a couple of days ago and it just worked.

My new 128GB SSD arrived in the post yesterday, so this morning followed the method I posted. It failed at the first hurdle since the Start Up disk that MS Win7 Backup & Restore produced would not boot the pc. Problem with BIOS and EFI.

So, followed your suggestion and downloaded Paragon.

Following their method I did not need to make an image of the C-drive data, just simply copied C-drive to the new drive and put the new drive in without the original C-drive and away it went. After extending the Windows 7 partition into the Unallocated drive space, I now have what I wanted: a C-drive with about 50% unused which will allow for future additional software.

So thanks for the recommendation and also thanks Tim for concurring Paragon.
