Where's Search Box in IE11?

[link to this post]

Just started with IE11 in Win 8.1.

Have got umpteen search providers set up, few pre-installed and some transferred from Vista, but I've got nowehere to type my search into. Looked everywhere for a setting frown altho' don't remember having to set anything in IE8.

Ah, I see! Subtle! Thanks!

And you choose the non-default search provider from the icons below.

Even though Mozilla provide a search box in Firefox, you can also search in the web entry area - which does make you wonder why the former is provided...

The advantage of typing in the search box in Firefox is that you're prompted, which you're not if you type in the address box.

Either click on the magnifying glass (to the right of the URL entry box) or (quicker, as you're going to be using the keyboard to type in the search term anyway) type <ctrl>-E to get a search box. If you use the latter option it's quicker than selecting a search box with the mouse and then typing into it. If you use the former it's the same number of actions.

This way you get all of the advantages of a normal search box (you can search for a URL and you get prompted).

What do you mean - I get the same results (and nothing extra) with both ways.

Prompted as in suggestions. Also, if you were indeed searching for www.google.com for example, then you would get a different result obviously, as typing that in address bar will take you to www.google.com whereas in the search bar it will run a search for "www.google.com"... Kind of obvious, but the point is there are differences anyhow smile

So how do you search for text within the webpage that you are looking at?

Does Ctrl+F help? It is how to do it in Firefox, so perhaps IE as well.

Worth remembering is that combination, it works in all windows programs if there is a search facility.

Or Find is on the Edit menu of both IE & FF (& many other Win apps) if you can't remember <CTRL>F.

1 - searching in addrss bar can be disabled (I do this)
2 - more searches can be done in the search bar than the address bar
3 - the search bar will display your msot previous search, the address bar wont.

I guess there is other advantages as well but I have gave 3 here.

One defenite design mistake in recent browsers is the obsession of making the address bar longer and longer.
