Does Classic Shell give the option to boot straight to the desktop so the Start screen becomes irrelevant?
Or is that a Win 8.1 capability?

Windows 8.1 has that ability on its own. Windows 8 did with the aid of various programs that revitalised the Start Menu.

Yes.
You can set Win 8.1 to do this, without Classic Shell

I used to go to my desktop at logon using a schedule task in Win 8. When I upgraded I deleted the scheduled task and set the option in the taskbar properties - it works really well, quicker and slicker than the old method.

Yes Classic Shell has this option for win 8 unless it has been removed with the advent of 8.1.

Anyone here with experience, good, bad, or what, of StartIsBack?

I tried Startisback went it was beta (and free) it was ok.
Then I tried Classic Shell which I thought a lot better.
Startisback has no doubt improved, but I can't see the point in paying when there are free ones.

I have Startisback installed, using 8.1, i prefer it to the others as it looks and acts more like the original start menu in 7. I think it is worth the little bit of money it costs.

Thanks for that.
I've been recommended StartIsBack and, as you say, the cost is so small (even for me, a Yorkshireman) that I wouldn't have any objections.
Can try it on 30 day trial and see how it goes.
