I've almost finished setting up an Windows 8.1 stand alone desktop PC for a friend, it had Windows 8 pre-installed. Once she's completely happy with it I want to create a recovery disc (CD or DVD) and system image.
The only info i can find about recovery media is for a USB stick, nothing foe CD/DVD. Is it possible to have a Win 8.1 recovery disc on CD/DVD? If so how do I create one?
Or does it have to be a USB stick?

The answer is "yes"...
Linky-poo
Edit: Sorry--that's for creating an installation disk.
For a recovery disk, the answer appears to be "yes and no"...

The short answer is that you can use the installation disk to perform system recovery.
'Sir, please,' she said... 'Will you not share your wisdom with us?'
'I have no wisdom,' he told her.
'Your experiences, then?'
'They have been trivial, uninteresting, and full of error.'

Except there's no installation disc...

I don't understand. Microsoft give detailed instructions for creating one.

I have made a recovery USB stick, which I hope not to test. I made it after upgrading to 8.1 but I am not sure whether or not the recovery is to 8 or 8.1, must do some googling if the answer does not pop up here.
It does strike me as a little unfair/short sighted etc that they no longer supply the operating system on a disc AND you have to go out and buy a 16GB USB stick.

They give it for Windows 8, not for 8.1 as far as I can see, they've removed some features that would have allowed an optical disc to be created.
I gather there may be a recovery partition but I'm still concerned what would happen if the HDD fails. So I'm trying to cover that contingency.
What about the likes of Acronis or something similar - preferably free?

You can use the installation media (which may be a DVD) to do a system recovery.

From your link Important
If you don't have a Windows 8.1 product key, you can't create installation media. You can't use a Windows 8 product key for this. So it looks more and more like getting a USB drive for it.

Looks like you should have created a Win 8 installation disk before you upgraded to 8.1.

Looks like I'll have to create a Recovery drive on a USB stick. Any ideas as to how big a stick?
