Printer works fine on x86 version but for some reason on the x64 version the spooler is not communicating with any printer except the wps printer/writer. I have an HP 710c and a D1460 deskjets and cant print to either. The 64 bit drivers come with windows for both but when i print a test page - nothing. I did a fresh install of win 8.1 update 1 from a usb drive using my key and activate the x64 version. Any help as google and MS community has turned up nothing so far?

It seems to be a known problem with 64-bit Windows installations. A patch is available but it currently does not work with Windows 8.

Try installing the latest D1460 drivers--they are available for Win 8.1 64-bit.

That worked 1 down 1 to go at least I can print to 1 printer now.

Is this a directly connected printer or is it one shared across the network?

The HP 710C is a very old model. It is parallel port only. I have an OfficeJet 725 multifunction printer--same technology and same problems. I just use it as a stand-alone fax machine and copier.

The one that works is a network printer the one that doesnt is directly connected. Even the patch mick linked to doesnt work on win 8 although it is for win 7.

In that thread you linked to mick the poster said a win 8 patch may be forthcoming so there is hope for my rock solid 710c, although I can now print across the network to the D1460.

That worked 1 down 1 to go at least I can print to 1 printer now. My guess is that the existing drivers for the 710C etc. were written using the Windows NT driver model and support for this was dropped in Windows 8, so don't hold your breath.

I missed that. Someone at Microsoft must be very dedicated to provide Windows 8 support for these printers.

The HP 710C is a very old model. It is parallel port only. How old?
FWIW: I have an XP-connected HP DeskJet 895Cxi Parallel printer, which could be same vintage (takes same ink), that is accessible shared across network by my (EDIT: ) 64-bit Win8.1 laptop. Pretty sure when I 'added' it to W8.1 it found the necessary drivers.

General point. I have a very old HP laser jet 6P, which is paralell port only. As my machine (Win7 64bit) is USB only I gladly accepted a USB to Parallel port converter that my Sister in law no longer need. It works a treat.
Last time I tried admittedly not recently, I was able to print to both the printers connected to the Win 7 machine from the win8 laptop.

Update:
A while ago I updated the laptop to 8.1, or maybe it did it itself. I have just turned it on for the first time in weeks, (well at home anyway) and as stated in the original posting, it will not talk to either of the printers on my Win 7 box. On Win 8 as per the pre-install, it did work.
