Windows 10 update timing

Like most others on compatible versions of Windows I got the little icon inviting me to take a free upgrade to 10 which I accepted. I was informed with a big blue flag on 29/07/15 it is ready to install. I will, but not yet, until braver souls have the experience and feedback.

Every day since, when I start up, the Shut Down button shows the familiar orange shield indication update. Sometimes it stays and will go to normal if I click the little arrow by the Shut Down button. The Update History shows "Upgrade to Windows 10 Home" status as "Failed" since 29/07/15. No surprise as I have chosen not to apply it yet.

I just wondered what will happen when a routine update for some aspect of Win 7 or Office comes before I go to 10 - can I make sure only those get applied, until such time I do the big upgrade to 10 when, I click the orange shield.
