"The proxy server is refusing connections" in Google search

At random times over the last week I've been getting this message (Windows 10 64-bit, Firefox 44.0). It seems to happen no matter what the proxy setting is set to. Makes no difference whether I type the search string in the search box or the address box.

Edge and Chrome work OK.

Has anyone else been having this problem?

I don't have a proxy server. Sorry, didn't make that clear in the original post.

Thanks for the link, but no virus here according to a Kaspersky full scan... the odd thing is that it's sporadic, and happens whether I type in the search string in the address bar or the search box, and also if I bring up google.co.uk explicitly. Leads me to wonder whether it's a problem with google, but then others would be complaining.

Have you checked "internet options" to make sure it is absolutely not using a proxy?

And/or make sure Firefox is set to "no proxy"

Yes, thanks, I've checked both places and it is not using a proxy.

I think I've figured out what happened: something changed Firefox's default search url to google.COM from google.CO.UK. I've changed it back, and all seems well now
