Win 10 high idle cpu after update

System is using 25% CPU and antimalware service executable is also appearing at the top of the list with about 12% cpu use. My idle does not go below 55% so is heating up my dual core E8400 to 65 degrees celcius. I am sure the other day it was idling at 1%.

Using Windows 10 build 14393.105 (1607) x64

Will check my 32 bit of same build tomorrow.

Any fixes?

Sounds like a routine malware scan which should have finished by now.

Btw, I have a CPU of equal 2008 vintage, a Core2 Quad Q9300. I've certainly had my money's worth out of it but I think it's finally starting to fail. Hopefully it holds out until Kaby Lake hits retail.

My other 32 bit desktop E2180 is doing the same, idling at 59%, it was 100% until I removed the beta of anti.ransomware by mbam, now both machines are idling at 59%.

If its a scan it's taking over 24 hours on both machines.

Task Manager will show you what's taking the CPU

System is taking the most then defender taking about 20% each, which could be a scan, but bearing in mind both machines have ssd and disk use is 0.1% on both machines I'm not sure its a malware scan.

Try adding C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe (Windows Defender) to the excluded files list in Windows defender

Resource Monitor provides better information. You can find out exactly what system process is chewing up your resources.

You can get CPU breakdown from Task Manager as well, surely? I use the Detail tab and have added CPU time and all the I/O figures to the displayed fields.

Then I sort it on the column I'm interested in at the time. Usually CPU or CPU time or one of the I/O ones. Occasionally Name if I want to watch a particular process.

The anonymous SVs wrapping many functions seem to have disappeared in Win 10, presumably bundled in for this purpose with whatever they are running.

Found the rogue program. It was the Prey Project for tracking stolen devices. I have forgot my password so cant remove the devices but as soon as I uninstalled prey from both machines, idle cpu is now a steady 0% when idle. Prey hooks into the system so something must have changed in that last update so making prey obsolete and using high cpu usage.

I didn't know that it had been improved so much.

Do you mean it is useless compared to the Resource Monitor, which I have always found much less useful, or you really think it has changed?

It's always been much the same, barring what I just commented on, though I think it was in Win 8 it got a kicking and started with the current fairly useless defaults.

I had to use the resource monitor to track down a system CPU usage problem in Windows 7 (caused by an infamous bug in the Windows update service). With the task manager, the only thing that I could see was that svchost.exe was hogging the CPU. It didn't show me what process (service) was causing the problem. Maybe I didn't know how to make full use of the task manager in Windows 7. The task manager in Windows 10 seems to be a lot more usable (I have never used Windows 8 or 8.1).

Yes, svhost was the pig I couldn't remember the name of when I said "SVs". I agree they were a pain in the butt, as it was almost impossible to find out what they were servicing. IIRC they were still present in 8 and 8.1, but seem to have gone now. They must be showing the service/program and its wrapper (I hope) in Win 10.

There were cases where because of them Resource Manager was the only way forward, I agree.

Yes, they renamed svchost.exe in Task Manager to "Service Host", and made expandable so you can see what services it hosts. A big improvement on Windows 7 (not sure about 8.1).

I seem to remember seeing that Name, but just reloaded TM and it isn't there, but 17 svhosts are. I'm sure they haven't been on previous visits.

That's odd, you should see several of these:

Service Host: <Host type>

Replying to my posts has been known to cause strange time-causality loops.

They're listed under Windows Processes

Unfortunately prey isnt listed in TM it comes under System which isnt expandable so a bit of a guessing game. I knew the Kernel had been updated the last few days and prey hooks into the kernel so process of elimination.

So they are, thanks - but that still leaves me with the oddity on the Details tab.

svchost.exe is normal for the Details tab. The Processes tab has the main information needed anyway.

There we have to disagree. The Processes tab is completely inadequate when I want information.

What information doesn't the Processes tab display?

Cumulatives, mainly.

I did say what details I added to the defaults icon the Details tab. I assume I am not the only person interested in them.

If the Processes tab has all you need, then I have no quibble with that. Why are you going on about what I want to see? I assure you I do use all the columns I add.

I just wanted to know why you felt the information displayed there was inadequate. I agree CPU Time and I/O Read/Writes (for instance) can be a valuable columns not available in Processes tab.

I wasn't asking you to explain anything further. I simply told you the reason I was "going on about" the tabs was because I was curious to know what information you are interested in that the Processes tab lacks, and you answered it.

Edit: yes, I had overlooked that you detailed it earlier in the thread, but you seem overly defensive about the question, it was just a question and not an attempt at a criticism.
