Getting fed up with Chrome error message

On almost every occasion when I start Chrome I get a box

Restore pages?

Chrome didn't shut down correctly.

I close Chrome either by closing each tab, including the last one, or by clicking the cross in the top right corner.

I can see no particularly recent report on this on the web.

From earlier reports of this problem...

I've tried deleting some of the files in Chrome's Userdata folder.
I've tried changing the Crashed field in one of Chrome's Preferences file.

All to no avail.

I'm guessing something's corrupt but no idea what. I would prefer to avoid uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome, in danger of losing the customisation I've done.

Any thoughts before I think about scrapping Chrome?

One of the first ones is to reset settings (which I assume you prefer to skip until trying the others).
