Why does my downstairs PC floppy drive light come on at midnight every night on Windows 10?

Most likely the change of day triggers a bunch of scheduled tasks. One is attempting to read the drive. I'd guess at anti-virus scan trigger at start of each day.

Could be AV but nothing in windows scheduler for that time.

Install Process Monitor ( https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downlo... ) and start it running just before midnight. That way you can record which processes are trying to open files.

I don't know, but more to the point, you still have a floppy drive?

I don't know, but more to the point, you still have a floppy drive? That was my first reaction - Win 10 could do all sorts of funny things with such "antiquated" technology

Maybe it is asking Are you still alive, or a corpse of a drive?

Wow, you can still buy them (although looking at the price I think a shortage of users has made them somewhat more expensive than they used to be - the per MB cost is pretty substantial compared to, say, a 64GB USB memory stick). 14.4MB for £24.85 - that is very expensive (somewhat rubbish) storage.

I still have a zip drive very useful for small documents and there is just something about putting a disk in a drive.
