MS Office Outlook 2010 suddenly gets gmail login rejected

From first starting up this morning MS Office Outlook 2010 happily dealt with my 5 email accounts, 4 are gmail, is another mail service. We then went out for an hour leaving the PC running. When I got back Outlook was failing to access the 4 gmail accounts with the "Enter your username and password for the following server. The 5th email account was fine.

I can access gmail on my phone, I can access gmail using webmail. I cannot access gmail using Outlook.

I haven't changed anything, the account settings have been the same for ages.

Is gmail having a wobbler?

Any thoughts?

Gmail always blocks what it considered to be less secure clients - the old WIndows mail has been blocked by default for ages and I guess they have added Outlook 2010 to the list now. You can turn this off in the settings to allow older less secure products to access Gmail.

Looks like it's suddenly started working again. Must have been a gmail problem.

Better to enable 2FA and generate app passwords.

It does it to me occasionally, not gmail but on standard BT accounts. I need to either wait quite a while, or just reboot the PC and it works again.
