Win10 2004 update.

Anyone else allowed Windows to install Ver2004?

I did this morning and so far the only real problem I've had was that I lost audio output from my Soundblaster-Z. A full un/re-install of Creative drivers and apps has sorted that.

Last time I tried it was in June and I had to roll it back then, but it seems as if it's OK this time.

I have it installed, I installed it a few weeks back. It was really slow when i installed it, but I done a clean install and it is ok.
I did have a few problems a few days back with some BSoDs, but I think I sorted that out being something to do with memory setting in the bios.

Creative drivers used to be awful and I do not they have changed, i had the same problem with my Asus sound card, sorted that out now as well, just don't allow windows to install driver updates.

at the end of the day 2004 works, there is nothing in it that is of interest to me, but then that is Windows 10 for me, what ever they add to it, I do not use, i just want the OS and that is it. i would still be using Windows 7 or 8 if they would work on my machine

The next issue is known as "20H2". Microsoft have already indicated that it's ready to install on my system, but I'm reluctant to do so because it means the end of the "Control Panel".

For years, in many iterations, of the Windows operating system, it has been the one bit of useful software that Microsoft always provided.

No it doesn't I have 20H2 and still have control panel on my desktop.

They've taken a few more bits out of Control Panel haven't they? Put them into Settings?

Yes I noticed that but I think very little else has changed in CP. Jen Gentleman the GUI designer of Win 10 has been tweeting about getting rid of CP but met with some resistance.

I updated from 2004 to 20H2 a couple of weeks ago (very quick and painless) and I have yet to see anything that has changed/ Control Panel still there in all its glory.

It is going to be difficult to get rid of, some older hardware still use it for settings and even some software do.

There are also still some Windows stuff that needs the control panel, granted it is getting less.

20H2 is just an activator, most of the updates were in the last update, 20H2 just activated them, which is why it was so quick.
I am staying as i am for a while, once again there is nothing in the updates that makes any difference to me.

Control panel is still there. To be honest I have to look up what changes happen with each update be I rarely see any difference after an update.

That said once your machine is updated and running you won't need control panel.

With MS updates these days, you don't get a choice.

Choice with what? It is easy enough to stop updates, I have many a time, i have software that will allow me to enable and disable updates at will.

So I guess they were wrong!!

They may have made it more difficult to get to the control panel, but it will still be there, just like Internet Exploder and other stuff.

It does make sense to refer to it as 20H2 rather than 2010 - partly because of the confusion around is that a month or a year but also because there have been some updates released late so the month actually of release is not the month given in the version.

It is marginally better than UK number plates where 68 means September 2018 to February 2019.

Windows 7 Backup still only exists in the Control Panel, so that's one thing which Control Panel still needs to exist for in Windows 10.

The wbadmin,exe command still exists in Windows 10.

I'd be surprised if they stripped out the GUI and made it CMD-only since I'm sure a lot of people are still using it. It's better for on-demand backups than File History.

I've always preferred the continuous incremental method of backup (File History, Time Machine, etc.) to the big-bang one. I set up a similar system at work for our file servers, many years ago, using IBM's TSM, and was able to recover lost files for people within about 5 minutes of request. It made me very popular!

I see the merits, I think there's still a role for both. If File History had an interface to add a timed schedule as opposed to the "always on" backup drive, I think we'd have the best of both worlds.

Is that still a thing? It was useless in the earlier version of Windows

It's possible to add a trigger to the File History scheduled task but it gets reset on every feature update, which is annoying.

I believe they only automatically install these feature updates when the version of Windows 10 the user is currently running reaches end of support.

That might have changed though.

My system was running fully updated version 1909. I only re-boot once or twice a month otherwise the PC is on 24/7. When I went to restart, the option was to update and restart. I suppose I might have been able to refuse it, not sure. Rollback was certainly an option and I'd only just imaged both my drives so I just went ahead.

This PC is still running 1903 and it was only updated (automatically) on 4th November.
