no RDP setup on PC that i know of, and would need a monitor for checking

What about taking the VGA from the PC to an HDMI port on say a TV? Amazon will do you a converter cable for around a tenner.

sadly need to be using it now as work with sensitive data prevails, and no tv

and non practical for taking it elsewhere due for data protection laws

If you can get RDP enabled (remotely perhaps? Dunno not played with W7 for a decade or more or beg, borrow a monitor) then you can run it headless going forward.

Maybe worth a shot, if you've run out of other options....

Remotely enabling RDP

If the data you are working on is sensitive and you are quoting data protection I would strongly recommend you look at updating the OS sooner rather than later on devices running Windows 7

no need as it is non connected to the internet

win 8.1 10 and 11 are major concerns when it comes for privacy with all its embedded spyware

its just a monitor that is the issue or rather lack thereof atm

You could just transfer the data to the laptop by connecting to the C$ share on the PC.

If it’s not connected to the Internet the imaginary “spyware” doesn’t matter. I agree you should update to a current OS, but it’s hardly a solution to your current problem.

In the long term you need to review your overall strategy, as a single failure preventing you from accessing important data is not acceptable. What would you do if the hard disk had given up the ghost rather than the display? (That’s assuming it is just the display - if you can’t access the PC you really can’t know what the true problem is.

regular images and backup are taken for those very reasons

many years ago a HDD only around 10 months old failed and stopped working at the time the only way for retrieval for data was using the freezer method

in comparison i have HDD's over 10 years old and one that is nearly 20 years old running XP and win 7 dual boot and still going strong

thereby hardware failures can happen at any time no matter what is installed on them and at least weekly backup images with daily data backups for altered or new files and-such are very imminent in some cases at the end of the working shift

thereby putting new O/S software on existing hardware does non guarantee for stop thereof hardware failure

the monitor fails for power on and fuse in plug is tested and ok, standby light does non come on either

i have since borrowed an old CRT monitor [which gives a better viewing experience] for now till a replacement monitor [ordered] arrives

windows 8 10 an 11 are spying on their end users

not to mention the forcing for later versions since win 7 thereof is very bad business practice

if only if be that simple

the PC has been maxed out on specs for running dedicated work based software for use thereof and the laptop is stock hardware and would struggle at best

In a disaster-recovery situation “struggling” doesn’t matter; just as long as you can get the work done. If the software and data are important to your business you should have a tested backup solution in place (backup meaning a fully working replacement system - albeit with reduced performance - rather than merely backing up data).

Relying on forum advice isn’t adequate disaster-recovery planning.

Be sensible! How can they spy on the end user if not connected to the Internet?

On the other hand:
Such is the potential risk posed by this that the UK's National Cyber Security Centre – the cyber arm of the GCHQ intelligence service – has issued a warning over the continued use of Windows 7 PCs and laptops, telling users they shouldn't use Windows 7 devices when accessing personal data.
