Thunderbird on a new Win11 laptop

[link to this post]

Our village hall pc, a Win7 32-bit with Office 2003 is getting long in the tooth. I am looking at replacing with a Win11 laptop and Thunderbird and Libre Office.

Whilst transferring documents etc over via a USB stick will be no problem I am wondering about bringing in the existing Outlook 2003 emails to Thunderbird.

I don't really want to install Outlook 2003 on the laptop - assuming MS will let me (I am not sure whether I have used up the devices the license is for).

Cheers!

You need Outlook installed for Thunderbird to import mails.

Just get a free one month trial of Microsoft 365, install Outlook, open the pst file, do the import, cancel the subscription.

It would be best to switch to webmail and not rely on a mail client for something like a village hall.

Get an outlook/gmail account and then import all the mail, then use webmail going forward.

Seconded, means the email is protected against hardware failure, and theft.

That was something that I was not expecting....

I will give this some thought.

Our hosting package for the website has email which I as Chairman and our Manager access via Outlook, our Secretary currently via webmail.

I can see that there are pros and cons, but for the moment prefer to stick with what for me has worked. (Our Secretary gets issues with webmail - related to password issues I think.

Cheers!

If all the email is on the webmail servers then you won't need to transfer anything from Outlook to Thunderbird. Just point Thunderbird at the webmail servers and it should all just work.

Very true! But I have a feeling that not all email is on the currant server. I plan on checking tomorrow. to see what is there.

Cheers!
