I think so, even with current madness. The culture and ability to innovate and lack of red-tape is unique to the US for the "western" nations. But 50 years has moved everything on so much that most things are iterations and improvements on something previous. But of course Gates & Allen were implementing BASIC that had already been invented, they just did a very good implementation. Perhaps a parallel with Apple's Silicon CPUs now about 5 years old?
