Cotswold Wireless

[link to this post]

I have used Costswold Wireless twice in the past and the latency was awful and so were the speeds. Recently I have noticed on their site they are now offering an up to 10 meg connection. Is there anybody on here that has this service and how has it improved. Also does anybody know how they can provide up to 10 meg when there are no ADSL2 enabled exchanges in the area and ADSL connects max at 8 meg.
Im currently on TalkTalk LLU from another exchange and after watching watchdog I wan't to leave.

Simples. They either use bonded ADSL, A LLU provider or a leased line to provide the internet backhaul.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the problems with TalkTalk's billing occur when and if you leave them, might be better to stay put.

I've used Cotswold Wireless for 5 years and they have been excellent also you speak to a real person when you have a problem not a Bombay call centre.

If your local exchange has CPW LLU then you might consider using other providers like Opal or Xilo which could offer broadband with better customer services than TalkTalk.

Do you use their ADSL or wireless service? I have been with them twice in that time frame and both times the contention was awful. Now they are advertising up to 10mb so I wondered if it was any better.

BUMP

Hi, i would guess that depends on what they mean by "up to 10 Mbps", if it means they have a 10 Mbps feed to the network then that is not so good.

If they have a 100Mbps feed or more and are now using high capacity radio kit then it should be ok.

Have you tried to contact them direct and ask?

I use the Cotswold Wireless 10Mbit/s service. It's a purely wireless service. They put a very small transmitter/receiver dish (a square box) as high as possible on your property - they put mine on the TV Aerial Mast. You need clear line of sight to their transmitter on the Braydon Water tower - you definitely need clear line of sight. The latency is half that of my ADSL - if I ping the BBC website I typically get 20ms compared to 40ms on ADSL. And download speeds for me are good at 8Mbits/s though this sometimes drops to 3-5 Mbit/s around peaks times - but not always. I was only getting 1Mbit/s second on ADSL. I've had two problems with loss of packets which both times they fixed rather promptly. They are not the greatest at replying to emails so I would phone if you need info. All in all I'd highly recommend the wireless broadband service - assuming you do indeed have line of sight to their transmitter. And it is better than rural super slow broadband in every respect - both in speed and latency. And the sevice can be used for online gaming and Skype. However, they don't like you to use the service for video streaming for lengthy periods of time - say watching a streamed movie for example.

Hmm maybe an issue then as I would like to use iPlayer. Looks like I will have to wait and see what Hylas 1 will offer next year

Does anyone have a "proper" landline number for Cotswold Wireless (i.e. not the expensive 0844 number they advertise)?

Thanks
