Wireless Broadband and online gaming

My community council is trying to get people to sign up for AB Internets wireless broadband service as at present we can only reciee a maximun 512kb broadband speed.

Does anyone know if you can use a wireless broadband service for gaming (PS3) or is the laytency too high?

It really depends on the wireless network provided. If the backhaul is a satellite link, then latency will be huge. If the wireless network itself gets congested then again you will see large latency issues at peak times (or when a few users have decided to try to download the whole internet in 24 hours!).

Where are you?

Generally if the backhaul is a fibre leased line then latency could be as low as ~8ms, but generally more like 10~20ms depending where you are on the network.

The council are talking with AB Internet.

As far as i know, it is standard fixed wireless broadband, not satellite, but will ask the question at the meeting on \Wednesday

See if you can find out which manufacture they plan to use for the wireless network.

Make sure they are not suggesting a mesh network i.e. make sure it will be point to multipoint.

Forget that on checking their web site it says they use point to multipoint ... so no mesh rubbish.

Try and find out what capacity the fibre or/and wireless point-to-point into the area will be. I.e. are they going to try and run a whole village off 10Mbps backhaul and then sell it as a upto 10Mbps service. If so in the evenings you'll never see the full speed because contention will kick in. Would be better if they provided 20Mbps+ into the village and then sold it as 10Mbps, thus no single user would max out the backhaul.

I agree with 5km on what he says.

Our own general rule of thumb is to never offer the customer a speed of more than 25% of the backhaul speeds. Thus for 20Mbps backhauls we would not offer more than 5Mbps (though we might let it drift higher if it can).

They are only offering on their website up to 10mb with most packages being 6mb or so.
