Zen and WoW

Hi,

I am currently with Nildram and for almost 5 weeks now I, along with many others on Nildram have been suffering from massive lag spikes and disconnections to World of Warcraft. I was wondering if any such problems have been occuring with Zen because I am on the verge of swapping over my ISP and Zen has caught my eye.
I'm especially interested to hear from anyone playing on the US WoW servers as that is where I play although people on the euro servers with Nildram are suffering from the same problems, so anyone on the euro servers I'm interested in your experience over the last month+ also.

are you sure its nildram ?? I read alot of threads on other BBS of people having very similar issues.

I can't speak specifically about WOW, but can confirm Zen don't throttle the ports used by Steam (as my last providor talktalk did).

I did ask Zen specifically when i moved to them if they throttled any game ports and was told that they did not.

It seems that some of the traffic shaping software used by many ISP's can have a serious affect on gaming even if it shows up more subtly elsewhere.
Are Nildram throttling non standard ports in peak time?

After following the Talktalk users on forums such as Steam, WOW (and heard about Eve Online) I know that it doesn't take much to cause online gaming to become unplayable.

Its not a matter of me being unhappy with my ping - its to do with the fact that the game just freezes up for 5-10 seconds at a time and eventually completely disconnects from the server, making the game unplayable

wow works ok, havnt been playing much recently but the game doesnt freeze or disconnect with zen. latency can sometimes get 200+ but it depends which data center the server is in (one seems worse than the other) you wont have any big problems

No doubt you've checked, but are you absolutely sure it's the connection rather than PC Hardware/Software related?

A brief summary in case it helps.

It is an issue that appears to be within Telia's domain and yes it is being reported by non-Nildram people but not by all ISPs so it most probably relates to a specific Telia router that some pass through but not all.

It is not affecting all WoW play but mostly occurs during raids where the network traffic peaks.

Most helpful replies to the OP would come from high level raiders as casual / group play isn't really being affected in the same way or at least not to the same degree.

I would be very interested in hearing responses too this also. Im having same problems with nildram, (latency creaps up followed by disconnet whilst raiding) whilst i understand its not nildrams fault my connection is pimerily for gaming and wow is the game I spend most time on so terefore will be changing isp this week.

I would perticuarly like too hear from ppl who are in to heavy raiding places like BWL/TAQ is where is seem to suffer from disconnects most.

FWI a tracert too the eu.logon server wont really provide any info on this matter as for some 'security issue' after a few hops too telia the responses time out on from any isp(prolly so you can see the mess of the routing, lol)

Oh yes it damn well is. I've been levelling a character on WoW with Nilly and its atrocious. As I'm leveling I don't raid! When I party up for instances I seem to be ok. My DC's happen with regularity. I've had 8 DC's so far this Sunday morning in less than 1 hour and that is pretty typical. And this is in an area of the game landscape where there is just me and non-player mobs as I'm questing. There were no other players around. This is typical too. I came here to see if Zen users were experiencing problems and it appears not.

The problem affects casual group players and questers as much as it does raiders Mr Taylor. Your information is innacurate. You will get more rants by raiders because it matters more to them than that if they were juat questing and solo play. This really has got to be fixed otherwise I'm off too, regardless of whose fault it is.
