Is this normal?

[link to this post]

Hi

Read loads on here about max and speeds up and down like a yoyo.. but mine tend to be down more than up - see http://www.thinkbroadband.com/user/showspeedgraph/id/2235.html

Migrated to zen max in dec, previously p*p*x 1M. In jan I realised I needed to sort out a few stability issues with the wiring here, was syncing at 5-6000 and dropping up to 8 times a day but since I sorted it I've been syncing at 8128 and dropping less than once a week. Also in early jan my exchange (stepney green) went from red to green. Noise margin now 7-9db according to the DG834

The graph suggests things seem to be getting worse even though the exchange is supposedly less congested and my home setup is more stable. Speed tests here at TBB normally show 1/2-1/3 of the speed I see on the BT tester...I assume this means congestion at zen not the exchange?

Is this the normal "max" experience? Any advice much appreciated.

Thats the reason I remained on 2mb fixed rate services. I never liked the idea of yoyo almost-MAX nor the caps that came with it.

Have you tried the Zen test files at http://fuller.zen.co.uk/test/ although not as convenient/user friendly they will probably give a more realistic result than any speed testers.

thanks for that, I gave it a try, bit more yoyoing between 150-400K/s which to be honest is about the fastest d/l speed i've had. then did a speed test on TBB and d/l was 1800, which seems roughly consistent.

will try it a few more times in the next few days

A more accurate analogy would be to equate quantity of download to distance travelled, rather than speed.

That would be hard - I don't know anyone who would want to drive a Trabant 24/7
