Bad pings - any ideas?

[link to this post]

Hi folks,

Yesterday I went to have a blast on CS:S and noticed I had a very high ping (150+) to the servers I usually go on that are based in the uk. There's a dutch server that I sometimes play on and the ping is normal for that server. The other people on the server seem to have normal pings so it's just me.

I did a trace to the servers with bad pings and noticed the ping starts to increase at the same IP, here's one of them...

C:\tracert 81.19.223.99

Tracing route to 81.19.223.99 over a maximum of 30 hops

1 17 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1
2 36 ms 39 ms 30 ms gadamer-dsl.zen.net.uk [62.3.83.3]
3 16 ms 33 ms 19 ms erazmus-ge-0-0-1-1.wh.zen.net.uk [62.3.80.193]
4 21 ms 18 ms 20 ms bolzano-ae1-0.wh.zen.net.uk [62.3.80.50]

8 145 ms 150 ms 147 ms 194.117.136.146

12 152 ms 153 ms 147 ms 81.19.223.99

Speedtests seem to be fine:

Any ideas what the problem could be and should I get in touch with Zen or just wait it out?

Let me know if there's any more info you need, Cheers.

Yup, I just came on here to check to see if anyone had noticed the increase in pings.

gauss-dsl.zen.net.uk is a little bit better than the gateway your on but the pings are still 30ms higher minimum on average.

Must be one of those days.

your first hop ping to your router is 17ms this is pretty high... even for wireless, it would appear that your ping increase is from outside of Zens network.

194.117.136.221

Appears to be where the lags coming from, and is owned by telewest

The trouble appears to be over on the Telewest side of things, i.e. once your traffic has left the Zen network, so unlikely there's much that Zen can do unless there is an laternative route with another peer.

LG, If you look it's only the first timing for the first hop that is 17ms, the remaining two are sub 1ms. I would guess that the first one is probably high due to the time taken to carry out the ARP for the MAC address of the router.

I agree that the problem thereafter appears to be in Telewest country.

The NOC are now aware.

The high latency appears to be outside of zens network
