Switch off or not

I'm going away for a few days....normally I'd switch my router off along with all my other kit, but if I do this will it affect my BRAS profile? Should I just leave it on just in case?

If speed isn't much of an issue for you when you come back and can live with it until the BRAS profile (if it does change) sorts itself back out and your not completely relying on ur adsl connection when you come back then switch it off.

But as you said it's only for a few days ....

This time of year with so many electrical storms about, I would switch it off AND unplug it from the phone line. It's unlikely that your profile will change.

I think I'll switch it off; although we don't often have electrical storms up in this neck of the woods, the weather lately has been quite humid and in the past month we've had more thunderstorms that we normally get in a year. So I'd rather take the hit on speed for a few days than risk having my router fried.

I asked this question over on the General Forum last summer. I was advised that my profile would not change were I to turn the router off. (After all, we sometimes want to change router, don't we?) I followed this advice without any problems. Stormy weather, though, could cause a pattern of loss of sync and resyncs that might result in a profile change. Switch it off....and unplug everything from the phone line....unless Zen advise differently.

I think that summary is spot-on. It's only a large number of disconnections (not a single disconnection) that would prompt BT's systems to make changes.

Well it was fine in theory but in practice my BRAS profile has dropped from 6000 to 5500. The router stats are:

sync: 7104kbps d/s, 448kbps u/s
noise margin d/s: 8.0 db
attenuation d/s: 37.5 db
noise margin u/s: 21.0 db
attenuation u/s: 19.0 db

Can I assume that the BRAS profile will eventually return to 6000 or will this require some manual intervention?

AS long as you stay above 6816kb sync for 3 days it should return to 6000, but the fact it has dropped suggest you've managed to sync below 6816 recently, just switching it off while you were away will not have dropped the profile.

No evidence that the router sync'd below the 7104 it's at now, all I did was switch it off on Thursday last week and switch it back on yesterday (Monday).

I'll keep an eye on it over the next few days and see what happens.

In a similar vein... would it be okay to turn off the router each night? I ask because these days we're all being told to unplug TVs and so-on each night to reduce our "carbon footprint".

Would turning off the router each night cause BT to think it was dropping the connection due to line quality?
