what am I doing wrong

Hi

I have set up a webpage which has background music playing but for some reason it works fine in IE6 and IE7 but it wont play the music in firefox

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong and how to rectify it pls?

I know its a problem with the f.fox plug ins but I can't seem to get any further with it

Least the music plays in IE which is what my relatives use over in Canada

Your using the bgsound tag which is only IE compatible, there is a tutorial on htmlcodetutorial.com which explains how to do it in a browser neutral way.

Edit: Oh also your music file is in windows media format, it will work in most places but for even better compatibility consider converting it into an mp3.

I did try to use mp3 format but frontpage didn't recognise it and gave me all sorts of problems for some reason. It was late last night I tried it so I might try again when I'm not so tired

Most browser makers have settled on the W3 standards which are the official standards for the web. It's Microsoft that has a problem conforming to those standards (despite actually helping to develop many of them!). IE7 is better than IE6 in terms of standards compliance, but it's by no means a well behaved browser.

I'm seriously considering dropping explicit support for IE in the next version of my personal home page. It'll still work in IE, it's just that IE users will only see a plain HTML version of the site with no styling. Styling will be reserved for browsers that actually do what they're supposed to.

thanks for the link (very informative). I thought I'd do this for my cousins but I didn't realise how complicated it was going to be! Especially as I'm no expert with html and frontpage just doesn't want to do what I want it to do

If Frontpage doesn't want to behave you could always try Nvu. It's a free, open source and cross-platform WYSIWYG web page editor.

I've no idea how well it compares with Frontpage as i've never spent more than a few minutes with either (and that was several years ago), but it may be worth a try.
