Switch from IE7 to Firefox now!

Haven't we been here before? What on earth do all the non-techies who don't read The Register do when this happens? Oh yeah, that's right - they ignore it and life goes on as normal until the next incredible browser vulnerability comes out. Which they ignore, and carry on as normal. Repeat ad nauseum.

It has been reported on BBC News too (which seems to have caused "everyone" to over react and start using another browser - which for less clued up people will probably lead to them being confused, not recognising certain security settings and pop-ups/alerts/dialogues, and probably opens up a trap for them to walk straight in to).

No doubt BBC News won't run a news story saying "hey everyone, they've fixed it, please all go back to your original browsers"... They'll just report it as a critical update was issued that fixes a flaw, but users should consider using other browsers, blah blah yawn.

While I was being a bit flipant, I do agree that this has had more exposure than other smiliar stories - although the level of understanding will be about the same amongst the general public - i.e. low. It will be interesting to watch web site stats over the next few months to see if there was any impact. I have access to web site logs of some webistes that get a totally non-techie audience so I'll keep an eye on them.

There are problems in all software it just takes time for a hacker to find the problem and exploit it. Only when it has been exploited can it be fixed...
