Old ZenADSL Home 500 service - how to get on 21CN?

[link to this post]

I've been a Zen customer on ZenADSL Home 500 since 2002, this started out as a 512KB download speed but is now running at 2MB with an unlimited download cap. I download about 50GB a month, sometimes more. I'm paying £25/month.

As I'm on a 21CN exchange (according to SamKnows) and my line is capable of up to 9MB (according to zen.co.uk) is it possible for me to switch to a higher speed service while keeping my unlimited cap?

Basically I would just like the higher download/upload speed, but keep everything else the same.

You are currently on a 100GB cap from memory, they removed the unlimited from all their legacy fixed speed products.

Unfortunately to move onto 21CN you will need to take one of their currently available products.

Thanks, so that would mean moving to Zen Active (25GB limit, £25/month) or Zen Pro (50GB limit, £35/month)?

Which is a pity, as there is no point me paying the same or more for less, just to get a higher speed. I suspect a move to Sky Broadband Unlimited for a tenner a month may be my best bet. frown

I know Richard and the Other Managers have read the comments posted and are also well aware of what's on offer from other ISP's. We have been told that the products will be changed to better suit everyone including our Residential customers.

No time scales at the moment i'm sorry frown

Thanks Leo, that's promising, even without timescales.

I'd rather stay with Zen if I could as I've had great service, but when you look at what can be had elsewhere for the same or even less outlay each month it becomes harder and harder to justify staying.

I'm considering transferring my domain and email away from Zen as it will be cheaper than the £50 I currently pay and I'll also have the benefit of IMAP and anonymous .com domain registration.

Once that is done transferring entirely away from Zen to another ISP will become more of a no brainer. But as I say, ideally I will be able to stay and just have the benefit of increased speed for my £25/month.

Hope to hear news on new residential products soon! smile

I'm sure I edited the above post but now my edits aren't there... hmm.

I need to correct the domain renewal price as Zen now charge £40 annually for Domain registration - it used to be £50/year. However even this reduced price is excessive, particularly as .com privacy is not an option with Zen.

I'm currently considering Google Apps for £33/year (Web space, Calendar, IMAP and Mobile email etc.) with private .com domain registration elsewhere for about £10/year.

This would mean Zen only provide my network connectivity, making a transfer to another ISP a less painful option should improved residential packages not become available in the near future. Hopefully they will, however.

We do offer the domain privacy option now - it was introduced when domain pricing etc was reviewed:

Thanks kleeb, but according to the email I received from the Zen DNS Master (ElliotB) on 22 Dec 09 in reply to a question about the availability of .com privacy, it wasn't available to existing customers:

At the moment, we cannot offer domain privacy to our existing customer, but we are currently working on implementing this in the future. As it stands, the domain privacy option is an additional extra and is not included in the standard pricing of our domains.
...
I would not be able to comment of a lead time for the domain privacy to be rolled out to our existing customers, but I can assure you that this is something we are working towards.

Maybe the situation has changed since then - I don't make a habit of checking the Zen services page every month! - however having all my eggs in the one Zen basket is proving to be somewhat inflexible in which case moving my domain and email away from Zen will be for the best even if .com privacy were now available to me.

I'm considering using UKWeb Solutions in future for Domain registration as they charge only £3.50/year for the privacy option, rather than the £6.99 charged by Zen.
