I believe our product line will be providing some information in respect of our IPV6 plans in the forthcoming Customer newsletter.

Ta!
Although what's not clear to me is if Zen go IPv6 will I be cut off until I replace my ST546v6 or reconfigure it to work, or will IPv4 still work? Maybe this will be clear in the newsletter?

I am sure that will be clearer in the newsletter if we are going to mention it in there. If we dont; then I will ask the powers above to bestow upon me the Information and will post it here for you.

I am sure that will be clearer in the newsletter ....... Not quite what some of us were hoping for. The newsletter is still very vaque.
I am sure I am not the only one who is looking to be able to use IPv6 very much sooner than that.
What about a trial like Entanet have been running?

G'Day Tim,
The team who are working on the IPv6 issue have a meeting coming up. I have voiced your questions and they will be wriiting the answers to your questions together at the meeting.
I will have further updates for you soon.

Thanks Leo. Will be interesting to see how it works and what changes I need to make. I didn't see anything in the Newsletter maybe I missed it.

The newsletter 'briefly' touched the issue and hence I had to ask directly. As soon as I can I will let you know.

Hi Leo,
Is there any update regarding IPv6 from Zen?

Simple question - is my archaic Vigor 2600X (no wireless version) going to need to be replaced ?
I can't see any IPv6 settings in the console.
8 years and only a single power supply replacement and still going....
|
|
|
|
From what I can tell, pretty much none of the Draytek's support IPv6. I had the Vigor 2600 Plus and that doesn't support IPv6 (I think it's end of life too).
I also have (and currently use) a newer 2820 and that too doesn't support IPv6. If you look at their forums, you can see people almost pleading Draytek to add IPv6 support via a firmware update but nothing's come out so far.
|
|
|
|
I have heard a rumour or 2 that they are looking at using IPv6 support but nothing is concrete yet.

Thanks.
Its more of a generic question really - does for example it mean that if Zen move to IPv6, then everyone with a router that can't handle IPv6, will have to buy a new one?
Same question I guess for any ISP, or is there any 'workaround' at the ISP end which somehow avoids the need for the consumer to upgrade ?
I'm not fussed as my needs are now pretty simple and a router would only be a few quid, but more of a general interest question really.

...then everyone with a router that can't handle IPv6, will have to buy a new one?
IPv6 would be run using dual(IPv4/IPv6) networking stacks, so you would not have to upgrade your equipment unless you actually wanted native IPv6 (AFAIK).

That's the answer I'm looking for if it's correct.

Hi aquilla,
There is a programme of work underway to manage and support IPv6, although there are no timescales for when this will be completed at present. The official company statement for IPv6 is:
"Zen Internet has analysed the impact that global IPv4 address depletion will have on our network, products and services. We have robust plans to ensure this significant phase in the evolution of the Internet will not cause issues for our customers. Projects are already underway to add support for IPv6 to our services, in addition to IPv4. Work to provide the best possible customer support, service and advice forms a key part of Zens overall IPv6 programme"

I have an inkiling that we will be doing a dual stack. But at the moment I have no concrete info.
I am pushing for more info and of course we will be releasing it here when I have it.

Well, we're on borrowed time now:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12367484
I'm planning on getting a IPv6 capable doofa when I switch to FTTC. But it would be nice to have IPv6 support from day one (so I can' send it back when it fails to pass through addresses).

See that the Newsletter has a link to an FAQ but no timescales or info on routers. I'm still confused about if I will have to upgrade my ST546 to a different model or if it will still work. My exchange still has no date for 24 meg upgrade so could be waiting a heck of a long time for FTTC which would necessitate a router upgrade.

Hi Bangor,
Our rollout of IPv6 will not remove IPv4 functionality, so your old router will continue to work as it does now. In terms of using native IPv6 with your existing router (our preferred method of rolling out v6 is dual stack), this will be dependant on Technicolor (speedtouch) releasing v6 capable firmware for it.
As has been said already there is currently a programme of work underway to develop our products to include Ipv6 capability but we're not yet in a position to release specific details/timesscales.

That's interesting. Getting hold of firmware for the ST is difficult at best, plus the fact that I don't wish to upgrade the firmware on the ST546 due to them removing SNR adjustment on later firmware I would be pleased if the router would work as is under a dual stack environment.

It's fairly unlikely that IPV6 capable firmware will appear for the ST546 as it is an old model now. If you want to hang on to it and its current firmware while still having access to IPV6 you may be interested in this post:
http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/dslrouter/t/3962468...
I have done as described in the post as my existing ST585v6 is better than anything else I have tried on my lengthy phone line. I now have a RB750 behind it providing IPV6 connectivity to my LAN (currently via a tunnel broker),

Thanks Adam that could be a solution to my problem as I have two ST546 routers and they can be adjusted to get 8128 out of my line. If I'm stuck with native IPV6 this could provide a workaround until I get 24 meg enabled at my exchange.

Note though that your ISP will need to support PPPoE for this to work effectively. I am currently on O2 LLU which uses RFC 1483 rather than PPPoA/E, which made the setup fairly straightforward in my case.
Another minor caveat - the configuration works well with a tunnel broker currently, but there may be issues when your ISP starts to provide you with a IPV6 subnet directly. The RB750 does not yet have support for DHCPv6 prefix delegation, although I think it may be coming soon. Depends on when and if your ISP is planning to make use of this as part of its IPV6 rollout (no idea what O2 are planning yet).

Caveats noted Adam. Will have to do some research and try and get my head round this as it comes online. Zen are also a bit secretive about their plans so maybe wait and see.
