There's been some disconnections happening over the last couple of days on my line, in the early hours between 6 and 7am. PPP connection is lost, and my system attempts to reconnect. I believe the issue that is tripping you up is that sometimes, as my log below shows, you are assigned a BT address, depending on what is actually broken between BT and Zen (normally radius related). The router thus believes it is connected correctly, when it really isn't. A restart fixes this to get you back on your Zen address:
messages:Jun 17 06:21:39 pppd[29234]: local IP address 172.20.18.73
messages:Jun 17 06:21:39 pppd[29234]: remote IP address 172.16.10.135
messages:Jun 19 06:38:22 pppd[16041]: local IP address 172.20.18.81

I wrote a work-around with my Linux router to deal with this - basically, I have a script that checks the IP address of the ppp interface every minute, and if it looks to be a private one (as above), it kills the ppp daemon and lets it reconnect. It's a shame off-the-shelf routers don't support this feature.
