Engineer came - Port at cab broke. Had to wait 20 mins to get a new one activated. He left hours ago but now I have an open order on my portal and no internet. rang Zen TS who were useless .. I should have known things would go sour the moment they locked me in from 30 days to 12 months.
sucky mobile broadband for now it is then. Thanks Zen. You take your £46,99 though - don't let me having no internet connection stop you!

This is unfortunate, but I'm sure it will get fixed. Yes, they take upfront payment in advance before even provisioning the service, but this is not unreasonable. What would be unreasonable is for them to now start billing you for a service you don't yet have.
I'm sure it will get resolved soon.

And it did - order just completed now and although my old ISP's router won't work (and I can't find a config file to flash it with) I am connected directly via pppoe and so why I am bothering with another router I don't know anyway

SO I was a little hasty for which I apologise
Is there any harm in just using PPPoe via my Mac to connect? I leave it on most of the time anyway but does connecting and disconnecting auth affect DLM on fibre?

As I understand it, it is only forced re-syncs that would possibly cause the DLM to become "upset". So leave the modem alone now (for a good 10 days, or what ever the time period officially is; there has been a previous lengthy "argument" about what the official figure is, but I'm not going down that rabbit hole now).
Basic rule is - don't muck around with the modem/unplug/re-plug stuff unless you have to, and definitely try avoid doing any of that during the initial 10 day training period.
Disconnecting/reconnecting at the PPPoE level is fine.

If the physical layer remains connected (modem in sync) then it should have no effect.

okay thanks.
Yes it would only be the authentication and not the sync itself

Thanks that's what I would be doing. My mac is on all the time anyway so makes sense .

My portal says
Your current maximum download speed is 23597Kbps.
Your current line technology is WBMC.
This right for 80/20?
The line seems fine i was just a bit miffed
Edit can i also call up and take the offer of the free router or does it have to be done at ordering? As I had ADSL I was not offered one anyway but the one i had does not work so i am wired directly into the bt modem right now

Not sure about the modem offer, and as for the portal, it does not look to have changed over yet. Once the order has completed in our systems, the Portal is then updated.
If you email [email protected], you can ask about the modem. Tell them I sent you to them to ask.

Well there is an offer to new customers for a free TG589N but if I am also asked to sign 12 months I think I should be allowed one too.
The portal has been updated since 2Pm Friday and also my line profile is now 79984/20000.
Thanks I will message them. It's okay being on pppoe but my packet loss is mad and thats due to the pppoe i think

I am the only one on the cab (which is a new one) and I have dropped from 74 to 56mbps - I've done a BT speed test for when I call tomorrow.
This should not be happening
"speeds that won't slow down when you do"
I ain't slowing down..
