That doesn't mean it can't be your line... Lines develop faults... You should go through the usual things, then call Zen Support

Usual things include, but not necessarily limited to:
* Switch filter
* Check from master socket
* Check with different router

Hello,

That sounds frustrating. If you could please let me know your contact details and account details in a private message, I'll have a member of tech support get in touch.

Thank you,

My line is 80 meters long and brand new. If my line was that bad DLM would have chopped it down already.

still doesn't mean theres an intermittent fault somewhere!

EDIT: They said my line was brand new too, but turns out its only new for first 100metres then its been attached to some nasty old cable...

AKA.. how can you prove that "ALL" your line is new!

1) If that is the attitude you take with everyone why did you post here at all? Speak to Zen and they will want the basic checks done as have been suggested to you.

2) You might think everything your end is perfect and it "has" to be Zen but given your perfect
line I would be querying the stats you provide. My line is 140 meters and 20 years old, my pings on Zen FTTC are only 8ms ......

3) that TBB ping graph shows 2 line drops, they could be the result of power failures, modem and/or router faults or reboots or even BT/OR working at the cabinet.

ooo good spot, yes the BQM does seem to suggest Interleaving of some sort being applied to the line and can also confirm my Zen line of around 400 metres long and syncing right at the bottom end of speed expectancy also gets a ping of 7-8ms to BBC and other major locations smile

Couldn't decide how it should look so binned it for now!

I can, here is one hosted in Maidenhead @ Rapidswitch and the ThinkBroadband Equivelent

I can also provide one hosted at A&A if required!

Please note that my connection is hosting a couple of servers and also streaming CCTV from two cameras consistently throughout the day so fair bit of "controlled" uploading going on!

The house is brand new, the estate is brand new, the BT cab is brand new and the E-side back to the exchange is brand new as they had to dig one up the roads to the exchange (not that it matters about the Eside). Interleave hasn't been applied and the jumps in ping are Zen as they are always messing with my routing. my lines goes from Derby to Manchester to London and that's the reason I get poor ping times. It used to be routed to London and I had 7ms but Zen won't budge on that.

The drop today is when I rebooted the modem today to move some lan cables.

For those that don't believe me...

I am not saying that it could not be Zen, but not far from here we have a brand new estate my friends live on, so new, houses are still being built. It is about 1km to the exchange and brand new lines have been laid to service the estate. There are numerous people complaining locally about the terrible line conditions on the estate, after months of denying it, it appears OR have changed their mind and now admit there is a fault, on a duct access point that had got accidently buried by the developers, has now collapsed and damaged a cable.

So new estates are certainly not immune to problems.

I'm almost sure that the reason for you routing via Manchester will be something to do with BT Wholesale!

Even if your one is brand new to the cab, the issues you describe could be intermittent...a break in a cable somewhere maybe, damage causing by water ingress, or potentially a fault with cabinet/DSLAM equipment!

Have you asked your neighbours if they have had any issues, and also have you checked your equipment!

Zen terminate BT Wholesale traffic in London and Manchester. They also terminate LLU traffic in London and Manchester.

I live around 45 miles north of London. When I was on BT Wholesale, Zen terminated my traffic in Manchester, meaning latency to London had an extra 7-8ms for the trip to and from Manchester. When I was moved to LLU, Zen terminated the traffic in Manchester but more recently they switched to terminating traffic from my line (and presumably all other LLU lines on the same exchange) in London.

Unless it's changed, Zen's routes to the west (Ireland and North America) are lower latency from Manchester than London. This means that my latency to some US destinations increased slightly when my line was moved to termination in London.

London termination will always result in lower latency to London based servers, but it isn't always a good thing. Whilst low latency is nice, it is doubtful whether 7-8ms extra latency makes that much real world difference, especially if it does not add additional jitter.

I'm sorry then, I'm stumped at that one, I'm sure theres a reasonable reason for your traffic routing via Manchester instead of London though frown

I would think connections routed via BT Wholesale would determine the quickest route and depending on utilisation levels on certain routes to this could well be the reason for heading north instead of south.

The extra 7-8ms shouldn't have much impact no or at least I wouldn't think so.

I found when I lived in Birmingham with my Virgin Media Cable, traffic for Grand Theft Auto Online on the Xbox 360 used to connect to servers west of the country and worked a HELL of a lot better even though they travelled across the atlantic, however now I live in the South East and traffic is routed to Europe via London the connections are very flakey/Busy!

So in some cases, being routed via Manchester is probably better in some cases, maybe avoiding major/busy backhauls for data centres in and around London.
