Those signing up for home Fibre 1, Unlimited Fibre 1 or Unlimited Fibre 2 online today get a ZyXEL VMG1312, which is normally free of charge for new customers. I'm fairly certain the same router is offered on the business fibre packages, though there is the option for a discounted ZyXEL VMG8924 in place of the VMG1312.
I am using an Openreach Huawei HG612 with pfSense as a router, so cannot comment on the Zen routers, other than to observe that ZyXEL kit is normally pretty good. The VMG1312 uses a Broadcom chipset and seems well regarded on the kitz forums. The VMG1312 can be bridged if you wish to use your own PPPoE router behind it, though I still believe you're limited to a WAN MTU of 1492 in that configuration, unlike with a HG612.

Zyxel VMG1312-B10D users seem to struggle with it.
Business customers are also offered a Fritz!Box 3490 which is vastly superior.

I brought the Zyxel VMG8924 when i changed over from plusnet to Zen last month and it seems to be alot more stable than my old openreach modem ever was. I do have a patchy line thats quite far from the cabinet but its holdking up rather well despite the poor quality lines here. From my impression so far I do actually like this router.

What model is obsolete? I said that Zen are now using the VMG1312 and provided some details direct from the web site.
Zen now supply the B10D variant of the VMG1312 - I believe that the earlier B10A variant is now obsolete. Whilst the two variants use different firmware, I believe that the instructions for bridging the router and the PPPoE MTU 1492 limitation are common to both variants.

Why don't you go to the Zen forum, Broadband section and read a few of the threads there ?
The first page has at least 8 queries , there are more on older pages.

I have the VMG1312 model, it's ok but common with a lot of consumer grade kit, it needs rebooting from time to time. Eg, I was in France for the last 2 weeks and on day 14 (the last night) I couldn't VPN home. Zen support say they were seeing an active connection but neither of us could get an IP connection to the router.
tl:dr, the rooter needed rebooting which was impossible to do unless someone was physically there to do it. I'm now investigation other options including a more upmarket router that either doesn't need rebooting ever (like CISCO for instance) or perhaps something with a built in reboot schedule.
