Speed isn't right...

[link to this post]

Hi...

Joined Zen on the 21st Jan - plugged in the Fritzbox etc - noticed a considerable drop in speed from John Lewis (plus.net) and had interleaving etc switched on, so put that down to the DLM messing things up.

Anyway, the speeds have improved quite a bit, but we're still not quite back to where I was.

According to the Line Stats on the Zen portal my last sync was on 12:22 30th Jan - which I agree with, because I disconnected the router and waited 30 mins. What I don't agree with is the Sync Rate shown - 56,672 - the router synced at 63,035.

Obviously I try and chat to support, but I'm within the download range they "promise".

Whilst I'm obviously a bit annoyed that i'm only getting 88% of the rate *they* think i'm connected at, that's considerably slower than what it should be.

So, question...
Could it be that the number they have is based on a 6db margin, rather than the 3db i'm synced at?

Can anyone else suggest something that'd account for the difference in rates - i.e. my actual sync rate vs what Zen think i've got?

The sync rates in the Zen portal in my experience never tally with the rates reported by your modem / router.
On my current Zen connection, my modem is synced at 67035 (and has been for 17 days solid), yet the Zen portal reports 66830. Not sure why.

You could have a sticky BRAS profile (it happens), in that the systems havent registered your higher resync rate, and altered the profile accordingly. What does BT's systems report your BRAS to be?

You could try leaving the router off for a longer period (overnight, say) and connecting again to see if it kicks things into life.

It may or may not be relevant, but if G.INP is activated the sync reported by BT Wholesale to the ISPs Radius servers is always lower than the users modems say. The BT Wholesale IP Profile is based on the lower figure. I forget the percentage the IP Profile is, but IIRC it is 94.n% of modem-reported sync instead of the non-G.INP FTTC one.

Discussed quite a lot in the past on these forums. I think it is covered in Kitz pages and forums too.

What the effect is on G.Fast I dont know.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Three 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

If DLM also applied RETX This has a lower 91-92% Bras Rate than the RETX low setting which is the default setting and has a 96.4% Bras rate , BTW has an issue where some circuits that have had this R=ETX high setting applied and subsequently removed by DLM the bras Rate remains stuck at the lower percentile of the 91-92 %, It did the same to me I have the full max sync rate on a 3db margin but throughput remains at 72mbps, so 2-3 mbps underperforming And as for BT Bras Profile checking i have not had any visibility of this for over 12mths bts checker doesn't work and neither does that linked to here, Here's the scripted message i get every time
Looks like BT refused to test, possibly because a speed test or BRAS check has been run recently which prevents this tool from working. Try again in a few hours.
Debug: BT no BRAS info

Thanks for that link - most interesting!

The current Downstream BRAS rate is: 55.02 Mbps
The current Upstream BRAS rate is: 20 Mbps

That doesn't really match this on Zen's portal:

Upstream Downstream Sync Rate BRAS Profile Interleave Sync Date Date
8155 54855 56672 TR101 Auto 30-Jan-2020 12:22 30-Jan-2020 12:22

And I'm still synced at 63Mbps....

Aha - that's good to know - I'll go look at Kitz...

I've got G.INP enabled - so 94% of my actual sync in ~59Mbps - which just about matches what I'm seeing.

Is RETX G.Inp?

I'll try and post the modem stats when I get home, but 91-92% of sync sounds even closer to the Zen number - why Zen then need to do 88.8% of that remains a bit of a mystery, if BT have already put a profile in place.

G.inp has two levels or RETX low which is the default setting and High, which causes a reduction in throughput via the Bras rate being set to a lower percentile, the problem is once dlm has applied this setting, BT wholesales Bras server doesn't always revert to the higher percentile of 96.4 % Even after DLM reverts back to RETX low again
The way to tell what it set to is by looking at your router stats
INPRein: 0.00 0.00 =Low if high it is usually 1
