Zen FTTP Latency

[link to this post]

Hi all,

Been with Zen FTTP 300 for about a year now and never been too impressed with the latency. Any ideas what I should be expecting? I'm in Lincolnshire.

Usually hovering at about 25ms but regular spikes well past that. Very rare to get below 20ms.

Using a Mikrotik RB4011 as my router.

TIA

I've had Zen's FTTP 300 since January this year and generally get less than a 10ms ping, I'm located in Suffolk.

Here is my My Broadband Ping for comparison

That level of jitter does not look normal, could be router induced only way to know is use something that others can confirm does not have that effect

I'm in the Highlands (Inverness) and getting around 16ms to thinkbroadband.com on a BT 330/50 FTTP line. So you should be getting less than that unless Zen are taking the scenic route with your traffic. I suggest connecting any pc direct to the ONT using PPPoE and do a test to rule out hardware issues.

I'm at my Suffolk location at the moment and have been with Zen about fifteen months with latency here always around 7ms. After perfect service without so much as a dropped packet for over a year, things have gone downhill for the last week or more with evening congestion at times and full-time packet loss. Contacted Zen about five days ago and they requested I pause my BQM for them to check for packet loss, which I did despite saying I couldn't see a few BQM bytes causing my problem. Heard nothing back since so BQM back on and result posted here with the view it may get some response. I was thinking of upping my speed, but would not want another tied in as things are at the moment. https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/...

I am puzzled thinkbroad band give latency 43ms but a Zoom test reports 20ms how can this be?

I get 20ms-24ms in Northern Ireland on Virgin, my old BT FTTC was around 18-21ms - Weird someone in England to get higher

Latency is expected to be higher when running a speed test.

Setup a BQM and that will constantly monitor the latency (every second) and give a much better indication of latency.

Not in my case. My BQM went through a spell of showing packet loss, but this very day a reply from Zen containing an image of their line monitor showing not a dropped packet in sight, as my line has always been until the recent BQM blip.
