Fritz 7530 - disabling tr069 and closing the port

Have one of these I bought from Zen.

The router seems to check for firmware when it likes which ain't great if I'm working remotely during the day

I've tried to set the router just to notify me of the update so I can apply it when I finish work but it keeps defaulting back to downloading security and software updates.

I see the message in the logs that the service provider successfully transmitted information to the device, so I looked through security and can see TR069 is enabled but the Edit option has been disabled.

I've googled and seen various ways to disable it using Telnet but is there an easier way or can support provide me with a TR069 disabled version of the firmware image?

I absolutely understand this being on by default to help customers but it would be useful to be able to turn it off for those that are capable of doing so and closing the associated port.


I probably wouldn't have batted an eyelid had I not been totally dependent on my connection just now.

Appears you can get round it by setting provider to other.

Spending my working day sorting out problems for people WFH for my employer, not great if it disconnects while I'm working on something remotely and consider we use Skype for Business, I'd lose the call as well.

There is a option to stop updates automatically via the FritzBox if this is any help?

It wont stop TR069 but will stop updates automatically

That doesn't work. Within about 20 minutes from changing that setting, it will revert back. The event log will say "the service provider successfully transmitted settings to this device".

In other words, TR-069 changes that update setting to the max (and who knows what else).

The FRITZ!Box will search for updates periodically throughout the day but will only apply an update overnight, between the hours of 2-6 am.

Updates are typically released quarterly unless a security update needs to be applied.

Yep, ISP routers tend to automatically update the router firmware without any warning.

It has happened with me with TalkTalk as well on 3 different occasions in 4 months. Usually it happens in my case at 5:45am.

Your best bet is to buy your own router as many others have also advised me. But normally firmware updates are rare and they happen only in late night mornings so it shouldn't really affect you.

If the ISP router model becomes old with time then the firmware update releases will eventually stop. But that is if you are patient enough to wait.

If you buy a third party router like Netgear it will not auto-update by itself & the firmware can be manually downloaded and installed by yourself.

I usually use my own router, but since migrating to FTTC my old router isn't suitable for FTTC like it was for ADSL. So I have to stick with the ISP router. But definitely buying your own router may be a wise choice.

As mentioned earlier in the thread the default Zen settings including auto update can be overridden in the GUI by changing the "Provider" setting from Zen to "Other". No need to buy a new router

Zen don't have useless pieces of junk made for them like Talktalk.

They provide AVM Fritzbox routers which are a fairly reputable brand and more than adequate for the majority of users.

Would you make the same comment if Zen gave out Netgear routers? Would that still be an "ISP router model".

Even consumer routers bought in a retail environment do daily firmware update checks by default.

I've used both a Netgear D7000 and a D7800 on my FTTC line and thought they were both junk.
They made decent ADSL modems but I've not been a fan of any of their VDSL2 modem/router combo devices that I've tried

Well, in the case of Zen that is true. Indeed Zen supply a very good quality router compared to most ISPs.

But then again Zen is also much more expensive as an ISP compared to most. Fritz 7530 costs £120 on amazon for example. You pay Zen £34.99 they provide you a £120 router for free but in the end you are paying on average £10 more for the exact same 80/20 package compared to let's say TalkTalk £21.95.

So if we calculate 34.99-21.95=£13.04 Multiply by 12 months and that's the equivalence of £156.48. This is how Zen manage to compensate the router cost by increasing the price package. In fact they are making a profit as in the end it ends up costing quite a bit more than if you buy separately.

Not to mention (correct me if I am wrong) that Fritz 7530 router supplied by Zen is locked so you can't then use it with another ISP. Since the firmware has been modified by the ISP. So it would be better to separately buy the router from amazon and you know the router hasn't been modified and locked.

Sky supply Sky SR102 Hub which is a Netgear router but the router is locked and reskinned with Sky logo and interface. So I can't actually use it with any other ISP it won't let you enter login username and password of another ISP. Unless there was a way to reflash the original manufacturer firmware software, but I haven't looked into that. However, since the router model is old, new firmware updates no longer get released so auto-update is no longer a concern.

I have Netgear DGN2200 and DGN2000 which I used back when I had Tiscali and BE Unlimited ADSL packages because these routers were having problems with rebooting due to overheating and port forwarding issues. Although firmware auto-update was not my concern back then for buying separate routers.

I used them for a good few years and my experience with them was that the firmware had to be manually downloaded from the website and then manually attached via the router settings to install the update. I've never had them auto install once.

Now there are different kinds of routers made by Netgear, Sagemcom, etc so it depends what model you buy. When I joined TalkTalk I was mentally prepared to face issues and in case I wasn't happy I could then pay extra for a new router knowing that I am paying only £21.95 a month. My only problem so far was the automatic firmware update and the 30 day reboot with TalkTalk which I basically disregard as an issue. Quality wise I can't say the router is junk, it has gigabit ports and I am successfully port forwarding and getting 80/20 sync speeds.

I'm pretty certain that if the exact same official Sagemcom Fast router was bought separately these issues will not occur. Hence why buying your own router is generally a better idea, you have more control over them. The ISP router supplied however, good quality the firmware is modified and locked making it unusable with another ISP.
