[link to this post]

Hi there,

wahoo just ordered fttp. Just wondered if anyone has any feedback on using the fritzbox as a modem only as I would like to carry on using my own netgear nighthawk and extender for dhcp and LAN / wifi etc etc

thanks

If this is for Openreach FTTP you don't need the Fritzbox if you are using your own router. With FTTP the equivalent of the modem is the ONT or Optical network Terminator, you can connect your router directly to it.

Sorry, just thinking this thru - so the ONT has the username and password on it ? / does the authentication ?

thanks in advance !

**update - i think i can answer my own question - just set up a PPOE connection on the router, using the provided Zen username and passwd ?

thanks

No the ONT is like a modem in bridge mode, the PPPoE connection and authentication is done in the router which is presumably what you are doing already with the Netgear.

Ah thanks and makes sense. No im currently using skys own router (as modem only) and my router for all the networking. dhcp, LAN and Wifi etc.

None of the Sky Hubs support bridge mode (modem mode).

Bridge mode is where the modem syncs with the network operators kit at the other end of your local loop, and nothing else.

What you're currently doing is syncing with the sky Hub, and also doing the authenticating with the Sky hub (getting your WAN IP).

Your router is doing everything else but the authentication.

When you switch to FTTP the Sky Hub will be swapped with an ONT.
The ONT won't do the authentication with your ISP. You'll need to add that part to your router.

Depends if your netgear nighthawk has a ADSL/DSL port? If yes then it cant be used for Zen as the netgear nighthawk needs a WAN port then you can setup the PPPoE info in the netgear GUI at 192.168.0.1 with a cat6e to the Openreach's ONT port. see https://kb.netgear.com/20305/Manual-Configuration-of...

When you go live on the day, Login into Zen https://myaccount.zen.co.uk and under broadband you get the PPPoE info from there however i dont think a netgear nighthawk will give you 1G becouse of the CPU limitations with them been a ARM dual core 1GHz

The Fritzbox 7530 has a ARM quad core CPU so thats why Zen have more then likely offered it.but i dont see a WAN port on this unless it uses LAN 1 or 4 as WAN port maybe the netgear nighthawk dos the same on there ADSL/DSL devices.

Connecting to the Internet Access: Fiber Optic Modem
Overview
You can connect your FRITZ!Box to a fiber optic modem (FTTH-ONT).
Requirements
• A fiber optic modem that is connected to your fiber optic connec-
tion
• A network cable (for instance, from the FRITZ!Box package)
Example Configuration
FRITZ!Box Internet
Instructions: Connecting to a Fiber Optic Modem
1. Insert one end of the network cable into the “LAN 1” port on the
FRITZ!Box.
2. Insert the other end of the network cable into the LAN (Ethernet)
port on the fiber optic modem.
