Sky Q / Fritz Box

[link to this post]

I've had a lot of issues with my SkyQ system over the last couple of months, getting worse recently - my main box would freeze and thus the mini boxes would also lose contact with it as a result.

Sky came out today to see if there was anything that could be done and the engineer was actually really helpful and didn't give me any kind of runaround - understanding all what I'd tried etc.

He commented on there being a 'known issue' with some SkyQ boxes and Fritz Box routers via WiFi and offered to run an ethernet cable around the outside of my house up to the router upstairs in my office. He's actually made quite a good job of it and ultimately I'd probably rather have a hard-wired link between my router and SkyQ box.

So my question is, has anyone else heard of this or is it just an excuse?

We have had Sky Q since the beginning and never had any real success when setup with the boxes connected via WiFi.

I hardwired the majority of our house so all boxes are wired including the mini's (we have 3) and we never have an issue.

That being said if the box is locking up completely that sounds unrelated and could be a hardware fault, we are on our 3rd main box since launch.

TLDR; Hardwire as much as you can smile

The mini boxes connect to the main box via their own mesh Wi-Fi system and doesn't use your Wi-Fi.
Only the main box connects to your Wi-Fi
Thanks

I had the same issue. The engineer also hardwired my Sky box but I seemed to figure out that the Fritz Box kept on trying to force the Sky box to connect using 5GHz even though it can only connect to a router using 2.4GHz. This created a loop of the Sky box connecting to the Fritz Box using 2.4GHz, the Fritz Box then trying to get it to switch to 5GHz and the Sky box dropping the connection and trying again. For me, this seemed to be why my box kept on freezing.

It doesn't have to be via WiFi. I set up someone's Mini Box by connection it to the LAN via cable (along with the main box) Of course, not really a option in many homes.
