3 Xboxes on same network playing COD Vanguard

[link to this post]

Hi All,

I'm newly connected to the Zen 900Mbs CityFibre network and using the Zen suppliedTechnicolor DGA4134.

I currently have 1 x Xbox Series X, 1 x Xbox One and 1 x Xbox S hardwired. My issue is that only one console can connect at a time to COD Vanguard regardless of what i do with UPNP, Port Forwarding or DMZ.

I'm at the point of having tried everything, do I just purchase additional static IP's and give each Xbox its own.

So 2 questions really:
1. Can i resolve the issue with out additional static ip's?
2. Does the Technicolor DGA4134 support the use of multiple static ip's?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Paul

Do you have IPv6 enabled - wouldn't using that get round the issue?

I'm sure I tried to enable it on the router but it failed to obtain an IPV6 address. Its disabled as deafault.

Sounds to me like a NAT traversal issue with the multiple consoles appearing as 'one' so that COD servers via NAT can't distinguish one box from the other. You say you've tried port forwarding (no overlapping ranges?) and that doesn't help matters...have you tried various NAT settings in the game?

If you can't do this in IPV6 then the only reliable option I can think of in IPV4 is to assign public IPs and route it that way.

Sorry no clue what the Technicolor box is capable of.

Have you asked Zen to enable IPv6 on your connection?

You definitely can't do 3 consoles with a "DMZ Host" setting because on consumer routers, DMZ isn't a network and only serves to forward any unsolicited incoming traffic (not already matching a port-forward) to a single host.

When it's advised in guides, it's meant for people gaming on a single device (at a time).
I'd stay away from the "DMZ Host" setting anyway as it's tantamount to fully exposing your device to the Internet, so it is really only suitable for passing traffic to a device with a configurable firewall (like another router).

Port forwarding isn't really going to help either unless each console was playing different games on different ports.
Start by removing any settings you have added that don't seem to work.

uPNP can sometimes help but it is not a panacea and still won't make your consoles appear like 3 different devices to the outside world. However it does mean trusting all the software on your computers not to poke too many holes in your router's firewall, unless your router has options to limit what devices can open arbitrary ports.

It's funny because for old games, multiplayer was one of you consoles or PCs acting as the game server and the other 2 (and the outside players) would only need to connect to that.
But nowadays multiplayer functionality may vanish if the game developer or Microsoft cease operating servers for that game.
Plus I'm getting the impression that some of the player lobby functions are now dependent on "Game Launchers" rather than built directly into the game.

I would definitely talk to Zen to get IPv6 working as per other responses but also double check your game/servers prefer IPv6 when available (OSes usually do).

Thanks All for your responses.

I hadn't spoken to Zen about ipV6 as I'd assumed it would be enabled if available. I'll give them a call today and see what they say.

95% of the time this really isn't an issue but given there is a new game out and you know what teenagers are like. At least they all managed to download the 65gb game in less than 10mins smile

Last I checked Zen don't offer IPv6 on Cityfibre yet.

If your was stuck with one IP (only using IPv4 here with one static ip) Then theses a alternate port selection on the Xbox itself (not 360) as by default this talks to 3074 so could be this is conflicting

Dashboard > Settings > General > Network Settings > Advanced settings > Alternate Port Selection > Manual

You have to do each Xbox and then port forward the manual port and remember to set DHCP lease.

Remember if you have any QoS make sure you 1st prioritize them by xbox UDP ip source port rather then the destination port, And then make a QoS for any destination port between UDP 3074-3079 as this will help
Also no UPnP enabled on router.

Edit:
i forgot to mention, This wont work for backward compatible games so make sure port udp:3074 plays the most backward compatible.

I spoke with Zen last Friday and they put the request in with CityFibre Monday morning. Had an update yesterday to say the request to enable ipv6 had been actioned and they would update me when CF had done it.
Having read up on ipv6 a bit and got the basics, I believe this will resolve my issues as NAT is no longer used and effectively each device gets its own IP within the static range supplied by Zen.

That's interesting that Zen have to ask CityFibre about it - would suggest there's an element of L3 that CityFibre are responsible for, and they don't just hand the subscribers over to a Zen-operated switch.

Finally got an email this morning to say IPv6 had been enabled. Rebooted everything and now works perfectly. No additional config was required and just left everything as default.

Thanks All smile
