Many years back we used to put big files on a USB ( Or CD-Rom) and do just that, physically take the data from one building to another. We used to joke that for slightly further a homing pigeon would be the fastest as it misses the traffic jams
I've been told stories like this in the past. The oldest version being that they would start transferring a reel to reel data tape from Cheshire to London over their at-the-time state of the art national X25 network and send off a copy of the reel in a van.
Although the transfer via the network was often a bit faster than the van, if it failed, it would have to be started again. It was cheaper to send the van than lose precious time starting the transfer again!
