ONT Move

[link to this post]

When I had FTTP installed last year, the ONT was placed next to where my old Virgin cable came into the house. The front of the house and have had both my router used with Virgin and more recently Zen in that front room, then used Solwise powerline adaptors to send the network around the house.

I recently upgraded Zen to 500Mb and got annoyed with performance as most of the Internet needs are in the back of the house, PS5, PS3, TV, Sky Box, 4K BluRay player etc.

So ordered a ONT move through Zen, was around £150 and took 8 weeks to get a date, then a further 3 weeks for that date to turn up.

Open reached came along as used an old hole from Sky to run the fibre through and ran the fibre nicely from the back of the house all the way to the front and connected it to the grey CSP on the wall.

All working well!

£150 seems a bit rich but is probably right for sending two men in a van for an hour or so.
I'm interested in having my ONT moved, from the back to nearer the front, and think I'll open negotiations in September, when the current contract, also with Zen, expires.

My ont is on an outside wall wanted it in the centre of the flat, install guy gave me a fible cable to move it using the junction box the external cable terminates in. I must have damaged it somehow going through the loft, I thought I was being careful, so just used cat5e cable to run from ont to router, as it can handle 1 gig speeds it might not look as nice but was an easy alternative.

Openreach's base charge for the work is £118.72 including VAT as from 1st April. There can be other cost elements, as well.
