Zen no longer selling /29 ipv4 addresses to home users?

[link to this post]

Hey,

I was enquiring with Zen about getting /29 ipv4 addresses, but they refuse to sell them to me as I'm a home user, is this a new policy, I'm pretty sure they used to?

They certainly did up to a couple of years ago.

Hello

Given this article from earlier this year, I suspect they have removed the offering to conserve IPv4 address space

I think they could word it better. The only clue it might only be for business accounts is the title and the link. https://business.zen.co.uk/internet-access/ip-addresses but the text that makes thing ambiguous are as follows:

"A single, static IPv4 address is available free of charge with all of Zen's broadband services. However, we know that in some circumstances you may require more, which is why we offer blocks of 8 to 1024 IPv4 address from as little as £0.83 (ex VAT) per address, per month."

Which to me, sounds like there isn't a restriction. But, given the only page I could see this info on was a page about their business product. It could well be that's now a limitation.

What I find interesting is that when they were going to remove the original free /29 from the legacy product earlier this year there was an implication that there was a paid product for extra IPs. But it seems that maybe that is only for business accounts.

As it turned out, they let me keep a /29 (except it was moved) when I queried it. But if they put their foot down, seems there's no real way to keep it with Zen any more.

When I joined (as a home user) in June 2020 they charged me £5 + VAT per month for a /29, so they had been charging for it for some years. Mine was not, fortunately, in the range they stopped using.

I'm appealing their response, because it's an arbitrary business decision, but if they refuse to sell me the range, I'll move to aquiss when my contract expires in a few months. Annoying though.

I went with Zen because they were a smallish ISP with good customer service and catered to people who liked to do more with their connections, that's why I paid the extra over someone like plusnet for example. But if that's no longer the case, I'll move elsewhere. Aquiss is the same price (with an introductory half price offer) and I'm pretty sure they'll sell me a /29 space too.

Shame, used to like Zen

IP's have a lot of monetary value now, as a result of IPv6 failing to become mainstream. This perhaps isn't a surprise given Zen's recent actions on selling and leasing out IP ranges.
