Zen upgrade to FTTP

[link to this post]

Hi
Finally got the sale pitch to upgrade and I’m beginning to think I’ve made a mistake
Was promised much faster speeds than the Fibre 900
Is actually giving me

I was promised my router would be compatible and it doesn’t work
to link archer 2600

I’ve had to resort to this fritzl thing which feels like a cheap plastic inferior item

I’m getting just 200 download speed and 100 upload speed on the Fritz and nothing at all on the to link

If any one could help please ? Is the TP link compatible as I was promised ?

And is there anything I could change to get the speed I was promised as I’m now paying £50 a month for this

Much thanks in advance

Suggest you call Zen and see what they think you are getting. Maybe it's a configuration issue at their end.

When you say "sale pitch to upgrade", was this an upgrade from one speed to another on Zen FTTP? Or an upgrade from FTTC to FTTP? Or from a different ISP to Zen?

Otherwise there seem to be two separate problems.

1. Fritz!box slow speed: is the speed test using wired ethernet into the router? If it's wifi, all bets are off.

2. TP Link failing to connect: yes it's compatible, and if another router is working that proves the Zen connection is OK, so it must be a configuration issue with the router. Unfortunately this is something you need to sort out yourself if not using the ISP-supplied router.

Apologies

update:

1. Im connecting now, wired is about 910 meg down and 100 upload
2. still can't use my own router
3. wifi is shocking even stood next to it.
4. the telephone line with them was to be moved to the other provider in the house , but despite making them ware the engineer has installed over the existing point

That is one thing Fritz!Boxes are not: cheap. Nor (IMO) inferior either. If anything, I'd put mine as being pretty much the best router I have ever used or experienced.

I can't offer anything about your speed, but I would certainly stick with Fritz!

If you're getting c. 910 Mb/s down and c. 110 Mb/s up over a wired connection then it sounds like Zen are giving you what you're paying for.

You should be able to connect your own router using the PPPoE settings which Zen supply. See Zen's website for more details.

There are far too many variables for folks on the internet to comment on WiFi, but getting the full 900 Mb/s over WiFi is pretty difficult. For starters both the WiFi point and the device you're using would need to support WiFi 6, and then you'd need uncongested local spectrum. If you're looking for faster WiFi then you'll have more success finding someone local to help you. Obviously you'll have to pay for this separately to your service with Zen, in the same way as e.g. your electricity provider won't help you with fitting extra power sockets.

Your CCTV system also isn't Zen's responsibility. You may need to work with the supplier or manufacturer to find out how to configure it correctly.

There might be a reason why there is an 'End of Life' tag for your router on the TP Link website.

FWiW, I agree with the previous poster that Fritz!Boxes are rock solid routers. They are the router of choice for most German ISPs and they come with a 5 year manufacturer's warranty. I have used them for the past 12 years. I am now on a 550Mbps service (with another ISP). I have a Fritz!box 4060 and Fritz!Repeater which give me close to maximum wifi speeds around my home. The only comment that I have about Zen's Fritz!Boxes is that they come pre-configured which has in the past caused an issue when updating router firmware. The irony here is that Fritz!Boxes are extremely easy to configure and update.

The only true test of the service that you are getting is a wired connection from the ONT to device such as a laptop. Zen makes it very clear in its terms and conditions that it will not provide support for third-party routers. Zen also offers Fritz!Repeaters (at cost) to maintain wifi speeds around the home. (configuration requires the end user to push 2 buttons - on on the router and the other on the repeater).
